On October 17th and 18th I had the pleasure of attending Plan NH’s annual conference, which focused on Placemaking. I was invited to lead the closing session, which was a hands-on activity to explore personalities and processes of creative placemaking. Leading up to the closing I had an incredible learning experience with some high-powered movers & shakers in the creative placemaking world - Leo Vazquez, the Executive Director of the National Consortium for Creative Placemaking; Alexander Goloub, a dynamic artist who leads projects that transform communities and spaces; and Ben Stone, the Director of Arts and Culture at Smart Growth America.

Radically Rural: Reflections on the Mixers!
Arts Alive! coordinated the Arts Track of the Radically Rural Summit - beyond the learning sessions, there were opportunities to connect and meet and learn about other opportunities and resources for the creative economy and creative communities. There were mixers on the following topics: Makerspaces, Fine craft and climate change awareness, and resources from New England Foundation for the Arts.
Radically Rural is an annual two-day summit that brings together hundreds people who are passionate about creating vibrant, robust rural communities and eager to learn, connect and lead change. Broad shifts in demographics, communications, technology, economic development, and personal values are generating creative responses from innovative thinkers, change-makers, entrepreneurs, and community-builders who love their towns and know their advantages. Not only do we have inspirational learning sessions, but there are fun ways to mix up learning and networking throughout the Summit:

Arts Spotlight: Antioch's Dance Movement Therapy Program
Kimberley Burden & Tomoyo Kawano share the story of Antioch New England’s Dance Movement Therapy training program, and how it is building partnerships across the community.
“As dance/movement therapists, we believe that dance is life-affirming and that a person’s lived bodily experience and relational bodily action is the primary agent of change. The American Dance Therapy Association defines dance/movement therapy (DMT) as the psychotherapeutic use of dance and movement to promote emotional, social, cognitive, and physical integration of the individual, for the purpose of improving health and well-being. Dance and movement have been utilized throughout history for communication, rites of passage, ritual, entertainment, ways of knowing, learning, and so much more.”
